Are You a Good Candidate for Keloid Scar Removal?

Keloid scars are caused by skin injuries such as the following:

  • Acne scars
  • Bug bites
  • Burns
  • Chickenpox scars
  • Cuts and scratches
  • Ear piercings
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Surgical incisions
  • Tattoos

Keloid Risk Factors

Around one in ten people will experience keloid scarring, with men and women being affected equally. Those with darker skin are more likely to develop keloids.

Risk factors associated with keloid scarring include:

  • Ethnicity: Those of Asian, African American, or Latino descent are more prone to keloids
  • Being pregnant
  • Being under the age of 30
  • Having a parent with keloids

Keloids form if the body continues to create new tissue, like fibrous protein or collagen, during the healing process without stopping when it should.

Typically, the body knows when to stop creating new tissue, but some people are genetically predisposed to keloid growths.

According to a recent study, the AHNAK gene may play a significant role in determining keloid development in individuals. Researchers concluded that people with the AHNAK gene are more likely to develop keloids.

Are You A Good Candidate For Keloid Scar Removal?

If you have developed these troublesome scars and have experienced any of the following issues, you may be a good candidate for keloid scar removal.

You Find Keloid Scars Cosmetically Undesirable

Keloids can be large and thick, protruding from the skin with a different texture than the surrounding area and may be red or purple.

Your Scars Itch Or Burn

Many keloid scars can cause an itching, burning, or stinging sensation. If you experience pain or discomfort caused by your keloid scars, you may benefit from removal to improve these symptoms.

Your Keloid Scar Is Restricting Movement

Keloids can interfere with everyday movement if they are large enough. Keloid scars can be tough in texture, which can cause irritation and impede your ability to move easily.

How Can Keloid Scars Be Removed?

There are several options available for keloid scar removal. The size and location of the keloid will determine which procedure will be most beneficial for you.

Injection

Corticosteroids can be injected directly into the scar tissue, typically in three or four treatments spaced approximately one month apart each, to help shrink the scar and lessen inflammation. This treatment is effective at reducing a raised keloid scar to a flattened surface. Redness, itching, and burning can also be alleviated with this method.

Surgical Removal

Keloids can be surgically removed if they are extensive. This technique may involve a scalpel or electric knife removal. After surgical removal, post-surgical treatments are often utilized to minimize the recurrence of keloids. These additional treatments may include silicone sheet dressings (applied directly to the skin around the incision), compression therapy (to mechanically flatten the scar), topical imiquimod, or advanced injectables such as bleomycin, interferon, or 5-fluorouracil. Injectables work at the cellular level to disable the keloid formation process and hinder new growth.
