When people think of nose surgery, they often think of it as a strictly cosmetic procedure. While aesthetic concerns are still the primary driving force behind rhinoplasty (as it can significantly improve the appearance of the nose and increase confidence levels), it is far from the only reason.
Rhinoplasty surgery is also performed to correct poor nasal function and fix a nose after severe injury.
What Are the Three Main Reasons Patients Undergo Nose Surgery?
1. To Improve Nasal Aesthetics
Rhinoplasty can improve the nose’s appearance, which in many cases will improve the patient’s life. Some people are born with very large or odd-shaped noses, and rhinoplasty can help to increase confidence and self-esteem.
People who have been bullied in the past due to the shape or size of their noses often report greater confidence and feelings of well-being after having rhinoplasty.
Some common aesthetic nasal concerns include:
- Large bumps or humps
- Wide nasal bridges
- Crooked noses
- Flared nostrils
- Upturned or downturned nasal tips
2. To Improve Nasal Functionality
Rhinoplasty surgery is often used to correct poor nasal function. Many people who opt for the operation have trouble breathing through their nose (often due to a deviated septum), and making minor changes to the nose can help.
An uncorrected deviated septum can lead to:
- Troubles sleeping
- Heavy breathing
- Headaches
- Snoring
- Sinus congestion
- Frequent nosebleeds
3. To Correct a Severe Injury
Nose surgery can also be used to fix a nose after a severe injury. Patients who play sports or have had an accident or injury resulting in a broken nose may need rhinoplasty.
After a nose has been broken, the bones may join together, leaving a lump. Not correcting a broken nose may also cause difficulty breathing, infections, and perforations (holes) in the nasal septum.
Living with the after-effects of nasal trauma can be challenging, and rhinoplasty can help to improve the patient’s quality of life.
What Is the Difference Between Rhinoplasty and Septorhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure used to repair and reshape the external nasal structure. The surgery varies depending on the patient’s needs and can change the nasal shape and functionality.
Septorhinoplasty is a procedure that repairs/adjusts the nasal septum but does not necessarily adjust the look of the nose.
In general, rhinoplasty surgery takes longer to complete, and the patient will also have a slightly more extended recovery period than with septorhinoplasty.
