Who Can Benefit From Breast Augmentation?

Women With Naturally Small Breasts

Many women interested in breast augmentation have naturally small breasts and seek a more prominent and feminine bustline. Our plastic surgeons recommend breast augmentation for patients over 18 or 21 (depending on which type of implant is preferred) with no plans to immediately become pregnant, as pregnancy and breastfeeding can negatively impact their results.

Post-Pregnancy Breast Deflation

Mothers who have experienced a loss of volume and firmness after pregnancy and breastfeeding often describe their breasts as looking “deflated” and seek breast augmentation to restore or enhance their post-pregnancy appearance. While breast lift surgery addresses sagging, many women opt for breast augmentation to restore their figures as well.

At Davinci Plastic Surgery, we advise women whose breasts have begun to sag to combine a breast lift with their augmentation for the best outcome.

Breast Asymmetry

Breasts are typically not completely symmetrical, meaning that one side may be slightly larger than the other. Most women may not be bothered by these slight differences; however, dramatically asymmetrical breasts can make them feel insecure about their appearance. Breast implants can correct this for balanced, symmetrical breasts that help women feel more attractive and confident.

What Are My Breast Augmentation Options?

Enhancing the size and shape of a woman’s breasts can help her feel better about her body, but no two women are the same. While some may want large, round implants and dramatic cleavage, others prefer a more subtle increase to improve their breasts’ size and shape. Regardless of your unique needs, our surgeon can create an individualized breast augmentation treatment plan to provide the long-lasting results you desire.

Incision Options

The incision option that’s right for you often depends on the size of the implants you choose and whether or not you require a breast lift.

Inframammary incision

    • Made along the natural crease below the breast between the tissue and chest wall
    • Allows for precise implant placement above and below the muscle
    • Can accommodate most breast implant sizes
    • Easily hidden by bras and bathing suits
    • Commonly used again if subsequent breast surgery is needed

Periareolar incision

    • Made along the edge of the areola
    • Is easily concealed by the darkened skin surrounding the nipple
    • Excellent control for the surgeon during the procedure
    • Can be reopened for subsequent breast augmentation adjustments or revisions

Transaxillary incision

    • Made within the armpit
    • Uses an endoscope to insert the implants into the breasts
    • Can accommodate all saline implants sizes but may only allow smaller silicone implants
    • No scarring on the breast
    • No irritation or disruption of the mammary glands

Umbilical incision

    • Made within the belly button
    • Uses an endoscope to insert the implants into the breasts
    • No scarring on the breast
    • No irritation or disruption of the mammary glands

Breast Augmentation with Lift Incision Optionss

When breast augmentation is combined with a breast lift, the following incision options are available:

  • Periareolar – Also referred to as a concentric or donut incision, this option leaves little to no scarring and can be used for women when only mild sagging exists.
  • Circumvertical or lollipop – This option adds a vertical incision to the periareolar technique that extends down to the crease at the bottom of the breast.
  • Inverted-T or anchor – This option adds an inframammary incision to the lollipop technique.

Placement Options

Choosing the appropriate placement for your breast implants is critical to achieving the breast augmentation results you desire. The placement is often determined by how much natural breast tissue you have, the type of implants you want, and your lifestyle.

Subglandular Implant Placement

Also known as “over-the-muscle” placement, subglandular placement creates a pocket behind the breast glands for the implant to sit on top of the pectoral muscle.

This is advantageous for those who do not want any interference with the function of the chest muscles or mammary glands. Patients generally recover faster with subglandular placement than with the submuscular placement technique, as the subglandular method is less invasive.

Submuscular Implant Placement

Submuscular implant placement creates a pocket for the implants under the breast gland, tissue, and pectoral muscle. This implant placement technique is best for women with very little natural breast tissue or those looking for a more natural appearance.

What Happens After Breast Augmentation?

How Long Does It Take to Recover From Breast Augmentation?

It takes four to six weeks to fully recover from breast augmentation surgery. In the initial week, you must wear a support bra and avoid many physical activities, such as lifting or reaching above your head.

You will slowly resume your regular daily routine after two weeks, but strenuous physical exertion, such as exercise, requires your surgeon’s permission. It is important to attend your follow-up appointments, so your surgeon can track the progress of your recovery and maximize your results.

Is Breast Augmentation Painful?

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. However, there is some discomfort associated with breast augmentation recovery.

Immediately following your surgery, your chest may feel tight and uncomfortable. It is normal to experience redness, bruising, swelling, and tenderness, but this can be controlled with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.

Will I Have Scars After Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation can leave some scarring that typically fades nicely over time. It is essential to discuss your incision type and any concerns you have with your surgeon to determine the best option for your lifestyle. To minimize the appearance of scarring, be sure to protect your healing incision sites from sun exposure and ask us about scar treatments.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The cost of breast augmentation depends on many factors. Geographical location, breast implant cost, facility fees, anesthesia fees, and surgeon fees all affect the total cost of your procedure. However, price should only be one factor in choosing a surgeon. You should never sacrifice quality work by a board-certified plastic surgeon just to save some money. Proven results matter. Davinci Plastic Surgery provides plastic surgery financing options for your convenience.

Should I get breast augmentation?

Looking better and feeling more confident in your body is the primary motivation for breast augmentation. Many women have increased confidence when they feel more content with their bodies. If you’re dissatisfied with the size and shape of your small, deflated, or asymmetrical breasts, contact us today to see if breast augmentation is right for you.

Will my breasts look natural after augmentation?

Most women want their breasts to look as natural as possible after augmentation surgery, and the various options available can help you achieve this goal. Silicone implants best simulate the natural feel of breast tissue, and placing them under the chest muscle helps create the most natural breast shape and profile. During your consultation, your surgeon will advise you as to which implant size, type, and placement best suits your goals and your body’s build.

How have breast implants improved over time?

It is important to note that all breast implants, whether saline or silicone, have an outer shell made of silicone. Silicone implant technology has advanced to be safer, more natural-looking, and longer-lasting. Newer generations of silicone implants have firmer, more cohesive silicone inside them than older ones, helping them maintain their shape and improve their durability.

Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. If a saline breast implant ruptures, the salt water will be absorbed into your body without any health risks.

Where will my surgery be performed?

All Davinci Plastic Surgery procedures are performed in a certified, state-of-the-art surgical center equipped with the most advanced technology.

What type of sedation/anesthesia is used for breast augmentation surgery?

General anesthesia is used during breast augmentation procedures to prevent discomfort during your surgery.

How is breast implant size determined?

Implants are available in many sizes, so you can find the one that best suits your body type. The correct size for you will depend on your goals, the implant type, your current breast shape and size, and the size of your chest wall. During your consultation at Davinci Plastic Surgery, your surgeon will help determine the best implant size for you.

Where will my breast augmentation scars be?

Choosing the right incision type for your breast augmentation is one of the most crucial factors for achieving your desired results. Most incisions will result in mild scarring that fades over time. Naturally, specific incision types will create some scarring in that area, so it is vital to consider how the visibility of these scars may affect your cosmetic goals.

Will breast augmentation lift my sagging breasts?

As you age, breast tissue can weaken, causing the breasts to sag and lose shape. Women with sagging breasts are usually 35 years or older, but younger women with genetic tendencies for breast sagging or who have experienced weight fluctuations may experience drooping breasts.

Women in this category should consider combining a breast lift with their augmentation. When comparing breast lift and augmentation, it is important to note the differences in these procedures. Breast lifts are designed to make breasts look more youthful and perky, while breast augmentation increases the size of the breasts.

Will breast augmentation make my nipples and areolas smaller?

While breast augmentation isn’t technically performed to reduce the size of the nipples and areolas, our surgeons can include nipple reduction surgery to create more petite nipples. The periareolar incision can be used to resize the areolas.

Can I undergo breast augmentation if I’m still breastfeeding?

Many mothers choose breast augmentation to restore breast volume after having children. However, patients must be finished breastfeeding before undergoing breast augmentation surgery so that the procedure does not interfere with milk production and nursing doesn’t affect the results.

What happens if I’m not happy with the results of my breast augmentation?

Most women are delighted with the results of their breast augmentation, but if your preferences or breasts change over time, you can undergo breast revision surgery to remove or replace your implants. This subsequent breast procedure can also correct potential implant complications.
