A trim, toned body is something that many people struggle to achieve. Sometimes, no matter how vigilant you are about your diet and exercise, stubborn body fat won’t go away. When a healthy lifestyle, including diet and exercise, cannot help you reach your goals, liposuction can remove the fat from all your trouble areas and create the shapely body contour you desire.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that effectively removes excess localized fat from specific areas of the body to improve contours and enhance body aesthetics. The procedure involves inserting a thin tube (cannula) through small incisions in the skin.

Our surgeon uses a cannula to break apart fat cells and suction them out of the treatment area using a vacuum. Liposuction is not designed to be a weight-loss solution but a body contouring method that helps to eliminate stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise.

Advanced techniques, including tumescent liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), and laser-assisted liposuction (LAL), provide various benefits, including reduced bleeding, less bruising, and quicker recovery times.

Who Can Benefit From Liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction fall under one or more of the following categories:

  • Pockets of Fat: Those who are frustrated with localized fat deposits that resist traditional weight loss methods.
  • Healthy Weight: Adult men and women close to their ideal weight, with firm, non-sagging skin and good muscle tone.
  • Stable Weight: Individuals who have not experienced significant weight fluctuations for at least six months.
  • Good Physical Health: They are in good overall health and don’t smoke or use nicotine.
  • Understand Potential Results: Candidates should have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure.

Liposuction is particularly beneficial for people looking to refine their body shape and define their contours rather than those seeking significant weight loss. Patients with sagging skin and poor muscle tone may benefit from a tummy tuck alone or in combination with liposuction.

Why Is Liposuction Performed?

Body contouring is performed primarily for aesthetic reasons, to enhance the body’s shape and contours by removing stubborn fat deposits. Liposuction can provide a more toned and sculpted appearance. Additionally, liposuction may be performed for medical reasons, such as treating lipomas (benign fatty tumors), some cases of gynecomastia (excessive fat under a man’s breasts), or to reduce the symptoms of lipedema (a painful condition where fat deposits build up in the legs and lower body).

Some specific reasons to seek liposuction include:

Exercise and Diets Aren’t Working

Individuals who are happy with their weight and practice a healthy lifestyle with a nutritious diet and exercise plan may be unable to eliminate stubborn fat in problem areas. Liposuction will complement your efforts by removing excess fat to reveal your hard work.

Post-Pregnancy Pooch

New mothers with accumulated fat deposits in their lower abdomens, hips, buttocks, and thighs often find these areas difficult to target. Liposuction can help women restore their pre-baby bodies and is often combined with a breast lift, augmentation, or reduction for a complete Mommy Makeover.

Planning for a Special Occasion

Many aren’t bothered by a few pockets of fat until they anticipate a reunion, summer vacation, wedding day, or another milestone. Liposuction can help them look their best.

Which Areas of My Body Can Liposuction Improve?

Liposuction can improve a wide range of areas, including the abdomen, flanks (love handles), thighs, hips, buttocks, upper arms, back, chest, chin, and neck. Each of these areas can harbor unwanted fat resistant to diet and exercise. By targeting these specific regions, liposuction can improve or restore the following:

A More Defined Waistline

Stomach fat can hide attractive feminine curves or make a man look weak and soft. Achieving a more defined stomach depends on regular exercise and effective fat removal. Liposuction can eliminate visceral stomach fat and tone your midsection so your body looks more defined and shapely.

Pre-Baby Body

New mothers experience many changes to their bodies through pregnancy and nursing. Countless mothers go from a fit, toned body to having stubborn fat in the lower abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and breasts. Liposuction can remove stubborn fat deposits left after pregnancy to restore pre-baby curves and contours.

Overall Body Contouring

While some individuals need liposuction only for their waistlines, others wish to tone multiple areas of their bodies. Liposuction can tone the body, from the neck and upper arms all the way down to the legs. Patients can undergo treatment for several areas at once to improve their overall body contour. Fat grafting can also be used to transfer fat from one location to another for natural-looking results.

Full Body Rejuvenation

Many patients want to target multiple areas of their bodies for overall rejuvenation. Liposuction can treat several areas of your body in one single treatment for full-body contouring.

What Happens After Liposuction?

After liposuction, patients require a period of recovery that includes managing swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Immediately following the procedure, patients are usually given compression garments to wear, which help reduce swelling and support the new body contours as they heal. You must have someone drive you home and be with you overnight, and you will need to take a few days off work.

How Long Does It Take for Me to Recover From Liposuction?

Within two weeks, swelling and bruising usually have subsided, and you should be feeling back to normal. Today’s advanced liposuction techniques offer less scarring and less downtime with better results.

It’s important to follow all your surgeon’s post-surgical instructions to promote proper healing and achieve the best results. Wearing compression garments as directed, staying hydrated, eating healthy, and not smoking can all aid in a smoother and faster recovery.

When Will I See My Liposuction Results?

As swelling and bruising diminish, your results will become more apparent and continue to improve over the following few weeks. You can expect the treated area to be smoother and well-contoured. After two months, your results should be final.

Improved Confidence and Body-Image

Too much body fat that hasn’t responded to diet and exercise, especially in localized areas, may cause you to feel dissatisfied with your appearance. Being dissatisfied with your body can lead to low self-confidence. Liposuction can eliminate stubborn fat to give you a more attractive figure and boost your confidence and self-image.

Liposuction FAQs

Does liposuction cause scars?

Liposuction patients will have only minor scarring. Dr. Davison hides the incisions in inconspicuous locations to make them less noticeable. Any scarring will fade over time.

Is liposuction painful?

Dr. Davison’s surgical technique ensures your comfort during your liposuction procedure, so you should not experience any pain during treatment. Any discomfort during recovery will be limited to the first few days after surgery and can be easily managed with medication.

What will my procedure be like?

When you go in for your liposuction treatment, you will first be given anesthesia for your comfort. Then, Dr. Davison will make small incisions through which he will insert a cannula or microcannula and loosen the fat from the fat pockets. Finally, vacuum suctioning will remove the fat from your body through the cannula to permanently eliminate fat cells.

How long will my procedure take?

Liposuction may take between one hour and several hours to complete. The length of your procedure will be influenced by the number of treatment areas and the amount of fat to be removed.

Will I need to stay overnight after my procedure?

Most patients can return home from the surgical center immediately after the procedure. Some patients will need to stay overnight if their procedure is extensive. Dr. Davison will notify you of this beforehand if it applies to you.

Will liposuction help me lose weight?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss surgery. It is a body contouring procedure intended for those who are already near or at their ideal body weight. Even though you do not need to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle, if you still have stubborn fat that does not respond to diet or exercise, liposuction can improve your body shape.

Can I combine liposuction with other procedures?

Liposuction is an excellent complementary procedure to a facelift, neck lift, body lift, and other similar procedures. Patients can achieve greater overall rejuvenation by combining liposuction with other surgical treatments.

How long will my results last?

Liposuction results can be long-lasting or permanent if you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Patients can preserve their results by avoiding excessive weight gain and pregnancy after liposuction.
