Septorhinoplasty is a combination of Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty surgeries. Rhinoplasty is performed for cosmetic or functional reasons to reshape the nose – while Septoplasty corrects a deviated septum to restore (or create) normal breathing function.

Nose surgery is done for either cosmetic or functional reasons. Septorhinoplasty is performed for both reasons – to reshape the nose so it is cosmetically more pleasing and in balance with the rest of the face and for functional purposes to improve breathing by correcting a septum that became deviated through injury, trauma, disease or sometimes a previous surgery.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

If you are concerned about any or all of the nose problems listed above, you are physically healthy, have realistic expectations, then you are probably a good candidate for Septorhinoplasty surgery. Teen girls should be age 16 or older and teen boys should be 18 or older since it is important that growing is completed. This will be determined during your personal consultation.

Dr. Davison and Dr. Pinell are experts in all surgeries of the head and neck – and when performing Septorhinoplasty surgery they emphasize functionality. Cosmetic changes must look natural and are chosen to avoid affecting breathing.

Septorhinoplasty Surgery Overview

Surgery is performed to address the concerns listed above and will be performed in an out-patient state-of-the-art surgery center, complete with all of the necessary instruments available today, to ensure a safe, effective procedure and a good outcome. Your surgery will take about 2 ½ hours and is performed under general anesthesia. A small cut is made inside the nose; the nasal mucosa is lifted up and anything that obstructs the airway is removed or repositioned. The nose is reshaped externally through the same or different incisions and the incision(s) is closed. Swelling and bruising are normal and to be expected but diminishes daily until gone in a few days. Splints and a cast are worn during your week of recovery. The final results are visible over a few weeks time after all swelling is gone and healing is complete.

There are many reasons nearly 1 million people each year choose to have nose surgery – and our surgeons are qualified, experienced and ready to deal with any and every concern a patient may present.

Septorhinoplasty FAQs

What anesthesia will be used during my surgery?

Local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia are used for your surgery. This will be discussed during your consultation.

Can anyone have Septorhinopolasty surgery?

Good candidates are men and women at least 16 years of age, who are in good health and who have realistic expectations. Fully grown teens can have Septorhinoplasty surgery.

How long will my surgery take?

This varies depending upon the techniques used and whether or not you are having a combination of procedures done. Simple procedures can take as little as 45 minutes while more complex ones take up to 3 or more hours.

Where will my Septorhinoplasty surgery be performed?

Dr. Davison or Dr. Pinell will perform your surgery either in a local outpatient hospital or in our state-of-the-art surgery center. This will depend on insurance coverage and patient medical needs.

Where are incisions placed for Septorhinoplasty surgery?

This is determined by the procedure(s) chosen for you. For Septoplasty the incision is made inside the nose in a cell wall. For Rhinoplasty they can be inside or outside the nose depending upon the technique your surgeon deems is best suited to your needs.

Will I have scars?

Yes. The incisions do result in scars – but using the safest, most advanced techniques, Dr. Davison and Dr. Pinell artistically place them inconspicuously inside and outside the nose.

Is Septorhinoplasty a painful surgery?

Our patients tell us they experience discomfort such as a stuffy, puffy feeling. Your nose may ache and you may experience a dull headache.

Will I be able to drive myself and stay alone after my surgery?

No. You will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your surgery and stay with you overnight and for a couple of days if possible.

What can I expect during recovery?

Some swelling and bruising around the eyes is normal and to be expected. You will need to stay in bed the first day after your surgery – with your head elevated on 2-3 pillows. Patients usually feel better within 1-2 days.

What is nasal packing?

This is the practice of packing the nose with cotton – but is rarely necessary.

When will I be able to return to work and normal activities?

Patients generally are presentable and able to return to work within 1 week after their surgery. You may be able to resume light exercise after about 1 week also. You will be restricted from strenuous exercise and sports for at least 3 weeks. Lifting, bending, stooping and straining should also be avoided.

What if I don’t like the results of this surgery – can it be fixed?

Dissatisfied patients are rare at Davinci Plastic Surgery – but should it occur – “revision” surgery can be performed to correct or fix whatever needs to be done. You need to know that healing takes time and occurs at a different pace in each individual. It is important to allow healing to take place in order to be able to see and appreciate the final results – with any surgery – but with Septorhinoplasty in particular. Remember that swelling and bruising can disguise your final results until fully resolved.

Does insurance pay for Septorhinoplasty surgery?

If your surgery is performed strictly for cosmetic reasons – insurance will not cover it. If you are having surgery for medical/functional problems – i.e. broken nose that now hinders proper breathing – insurance may cover that cost. You need to check with your insurance provider.

Can I get financing for my Septorhinoplasty surgery?

This may be possible. Check with our front office staff about this.
